Now that I've got you here, you're probably thinking "What the Heck is a DevaCut?"
Well, a DevaCut is a technique created for curly hair where the stylist cuts each curl individually, at an angle, and while the hair is dry in order not to disturb the curl pattern. This technique is meant to sculpt the shape of your hair and enhance the way your curls fall into place when you style your hair. And in a recent effort to avoid chopping all of my hair off in boredom and frustration, I tracked down a #DevaCut stylist named Marni at Salon Spargo in Farmington Hills.
My salon experience was nice. Marni seems very knowledge and familiar with curly hair of various textures. She didn't bat an eye at my ultra dense mixed textured mane. You can tell that she's been doing this for a while and has listened to her customers issues and concerns along the way.
To be honest, she didn't cut much hair off. The amount of hair on the floor equated to what I'd typically see with a trim. The biggest adjustment is trying to get used to feeling odd and drastic changes in length when I run my hands through my hair. Its almost as if the new shorter pieces/curls act as a bit of a crutch to some of the heavier denser curls up top; resulting in a bit more volume and fullness in various places.
In the end, I definitely notice a difference in how my hair lays in a wash-n-go (which I never wear) but its less noticeable when I wear my two strand twists. I took a few (before, during, after) pictures throughout the process to try to gauge the change. But you tell me... do you see the difference?
UPDATE: Now that is been about 3 weeks post DevaCut, I actually wish that the cut would have been a bit more generous and thorough. I've found that although the shape is nice, I have quite a bit of dead ends that could have been eliminated in the process. This most likely would have created more of the volume an lift that I was hoping for - without the weight of the old/dead hair.
So if you go for a cut, be sure that the stylist gives you a thorough "dusting" in addition to sculpting your curls!
